Overview#

An environmental compliance team needs to verify whether a mining operation has encroached on a protected area buffer zone over the past eighteen months. They have satellite imagery from multiple acquisition dates, but without a structured way to compare scenes, track monitored assets, and flag changes against a compliance baseline, the review is a manual process prone to missed detections. Argus Earth Observation Intelligence gives that team one workspace to manage the full workflow: coverage scheduling, imagery comparison, compliance tracking, and alert response.

The module is a full operational workbench for organisations that need persistent oversight of monitored locations, structured satellite analysis, and compliance-ready reporting from earth observation workflows. Operators monitor asset coverage, compare imagery over time, review observation and analysis volume, assess compliance posture, and respond to alert conditions tied to satellite-derived monitoring, all from a single surface designed for daily operational use.

Open Standards#

  • GeoJSON (RFC 7946): All spatial data, monitored asset boundaries, satellite observation footprints, change-detection results, and alert locations, are stored and exchanged as GeoJSON geometry objects.
  • ISO 8601: Acquisition dates, schedule timestamps, and all temporal fields across observations, analyses, and alerts use ISO 8601 date-time formatting.
  • EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) 2023/1115: The compliance-summary layer explicitly tracks per-asset EUDR status (compliant, non-compliant, pending) driven by a dedicated deforestation-detection analyser, enabling supply-chain due-diligence workflows.
  • OGC Web Map Service / Web Feature Service (WMS/WFS): Geospatial layer data is served and consumed via GeoServer OGC endpoints, providing standards-based access to monitored-asset and analysis layers.
  • CEOS SAR Metadata Conventions: Satellite observations record orbit direction and polarisation attributes following Committee on Earth Observation Satellites conventions for Synthetic Aperture Radar products such as Sentinel-1.
  • GraphQL (June 2018 Specification): All queries, mutations, and subscriptions for asset management, observation ingestion, analysis triggering, and compliance reporting are exposed through a typed GraphQL API.
  • OAuth 2.0 / OpenID Connect: Access to all earth-observation endpoints is gated by bearer-token authentication consistent with OAuth 2.0 token-based authorisation flows used across the platform.

Key Features#

  • Monitored Asset Dashboard: Track the total monitored asset base, active coverage, and the current alert posture for each monitored location.
  • Observation and Analysis Tracking: View observation volume, analysis throughput, and active monitoring-module posture from a single operations surface.
  • Imagery Comparison Workflows: Compare imagery over time to detect changes, assess anomaly development, and support evidential or compliance decisions.
  • Compliance Monitoring: Surface earth-observation-backed compliance summaries for teams that need to validate land use, protected-area status, or other monitored obligations.
  • Asset Drill-Down: Move from the fleet-level dashboard to asset-specific detail workflows for focused review and follow-up.
  • Integrated Alerting: Monitor active alerts derived from satellite observations so analysts can move directly from detection to review and action.

Use Cases#

  • Infrastructure and Site Monitoring: Track critical assets, facilities, or regions for changes in activity, construction, disruption, or suspicious movement.
  • Compliance Oversight: Use satellite-derived evidence to support environmental, land-use, or supply-chain compliance monitoring with auditable observation history.
  • Change Detection Analysis: Compare recent and historic imagery to identify emerging anomalies, unauthorised development, or post-incident changes on the ground.
  • Satellite-Backed Alert Response: Investigate newly triggered alerts by moving from dashboard summary to the affected asset and associated imagery-analysis context.

Integration#

  • Earth observation dashboard, monitored-asset, and compliance-summary queries
  • Geospatial mapping and asset-location services
  • Alerting and analysis workflows
  • Shared hub surfaces for ISR, geospatial, and home-dashboard previews
