Overview#
Before a multinational exercise begins, the communications officer needs to confirm that the correct message formats are in place, that interoperability with allied systems is functioning, and that simulation-linked message traffic will flow alongside operational communications. Checking each service individually takes time that the final rehearsal phase does not have. The Mission Messaging Interoperability module is a focused workspace built for exactly this kind of pre-mission verification and for ongoing message monitoring during live operations.
The module is designed for operators who need reliable structured traffic across mission systems: NATO-style message formats, interoperability matrices, and simulation-linked messaging workflows. It concentrates on message-format posture and interoperability readiness rather than general collaboration or informal messaging.
Open Standards#
- NATO STANAG 5602 / MTFXML: Structured mission traffic is validated and exchanged using NATO Military Text Format messages encoded in XML (MTFXML), the open NATO standard for machine-parseable tactical message interchange across coalition systems.
- STANAG 5602 ADatP-3 message sets: Message set governance and traffic monitoring are grounded in the Allied Data Publication 3 family of NATO message formats, ensuring compatibility with the broader NATO C2 message catalogue.
- JANUS (STANAG 1074): Underwater acoustic communications traffic is handled in accordance with the JANUS standard, the first and only NATO/EU-recognised open standard for digital underwater communications, enabling interoperability with allied subsurface platforms.
- GraphQL (June 2018 specification): All message status queries, traffic counters, and interoperability posture checks are exposed over a typed GraphQL API, supporting composable structured-data retrieval without proprietary query languages.
- OAuth 2.0 and JWT (RFC 7519): All API operations, including message ingestion and traffic queries, require bearer tokens issued via the standard OAuth 2.0 authorisation flow, ensuring authenticated and tenant-scoped access.
- ISO 8601: Message Date-Time Groups (DTGs) and all audit timestamps are serialised in ISO 8601 format to enable unambiguous temporal correlation with allied systems and downstream reporting workflows.
- NATO STANAG classification markings: Message records carry classification labels aligned with NATO STANAG marking conventions, enforcing need-to-know access controls across coalition deployments operating at multiple classification levels.

Key Features#
- Structured Message Format Support: Supports review and operational use of formal mission-message standards rather than informal chat or email-style collaboration, keeping focus on protocol-level interoperability.
- Protocol-Focused Presets: Narrows the workspace to message-centric interoperability services so operators are not distracted by unrelated dashboard modules during pre-mission checks.
- Standards and Simulation Alignment: Brings tactical message handling and simulation-linked message standards into one operational surface, supporting exercises where live and synthetic traffic must coexist.
- Message Workflow Pivots: Supports drill-down from protocol posture into the specialist systems used to create, validate, or relay mission traffic.
Use Cases#
- Tactical Order Dissemination: Operators distribute structured mission traffic to connected systems with confidence that message standards and interoperability layers are aligned.
- Coalition Messaging Readiness: Interoperability teams verify that partner-facing message services are operational before an exercise or mission window opens.
- Simulation-Linked Communications: Exercise controllers and operators align simulation traffic and operational message standards in one workflow.
- Message Standard Validation: Technical teams use the module to confirm that the correct messaging pathways are available for specific operational scenarios.
